This webinar will present recent advances in the field of photonic integration addressing the convergence of plasmonics, silicon photonics and electronics onto the same fabrication platform. Plasmonics have emerged as a highly promising discipline capable of enabling high integration densities, low power consumption and seamless interoperability between optical and electronic signals. On their way to practical application environments, they need to cooperate with low-loss passive photonic circuitry as well as with intelligent electronics, highlighting the need for merging plasmonics with silicon nanophotonics and IC electronics. The necessary fabrication processes will be presented in this webinar and their roadmap towards practical applications in the area of optical interconnects will be demonstrated, utilizing examples from a high-bandwidth on-chip optical routing fabric pursued within the on-going European FP7 project PLATON.
