Abstract: Photonics is a key enabling technology that will only reach its full potential if Photonic IC design and manufacturing establishes a generic-foundry model.  Indeed, since a few years there has been and is a strong trend towards this generic, standardization-driven horizontal integration model, not unlike the development of electronics in the 80s of the last century. At present, foundries in a variety of technologies such as SoI, InP, Silicon, and Triplex launch Multi-Project Wafer (MPW) runs on a regular basis. This trend leads to a dramatic reduction of fabrication, packaging and testing costs for users of Photonics ICs, be it (small) companies, universities or research institutes. Users can subscribe to a MPW and basically get instant access to state of the art Photonic IC technologies.

This webinar explains and demonstrates how MPWs work from a user/designer perspective. Phoenix Software and Bright Photonics discuss the Photonics Design Automation (PDA) workflow across technology platforms. It shows the usage of process design kits (PDK) and the technology principles behind it. The webinar demonstrates building block (BB) design and the use of BB as IP Blocks for fast and error free mask layout design. Using IP-Blocks allows capturing extensive design and technology know-how and providing them transparently to the MPW designer.  Examples of realized Photonic ICs from MPWs are discussed.
